We are getting closer to completion -- I can definitely see the spice rack at the end of the counter. Things moved along a bit quicker today. We installed a new sink strainer basket using plumber's putty. Inside, we shimmed the countertops - they are custom countertops that were not made to standard height. The new dishwasher cabinet is taller than the old lower cabinets, so we had to shim it up about 3/8 of an inch. The wall has now completely dried. It also had to be built as it was made from horsehair plaster and had to be removed to replace the backsplash. We measured out the area for the sink cut-out.
Meanwhile, Todd started setting up the plumbing. Not having had a dishwasher before, we had to replace the drain pipe to accept the waste from both the dishwasher and sink. We also had to wire the dishwasher. It comes with instructions to call a qualified electrician, but a DIY-er wouldn't dare. Todd and I bought a length of Romex cable and a plug to create a power cable for the dishwasher. We sent the wire down through the pipe chase and wire the plug down there. Tomorrow, we will attach our power cable to the dishwasher wiring. For the time being, we are using an extra circuit in the basement intended for a clothes washer, but we will hardwire it into the breaker box when we move on to the basement project. Tomorrow will be a painting extravaganza. Now that the dishwasher cabinet is complete, I'll prime the entire thing and get a first coat of paint on it. Todd will finish the doors, I will hit the uppers on the other side with a second coat, AND, with any luck, we'll get a first coat on the walls. We also need to cut and install the backsplash portion that will wrap around the pipe chase. SO close to getting the kitchen back to cooking shape!!! We still need to deal with some finishwork. We removed the vertical blinds and need to find a window treatment to replace it that we like. Todd also wants to replace the moulding, but I think that is gonna have to wait (along with the baseboard moulding). We replaced window moulding in another room and it's a bigger, multi-day project that took longer than I thought it would. Also, we have yet to complete the moulding in the living room and dining room, so moulding for the first floor may be its own project. Seriously, props to people who do physical labor every day - we are exhausted!!
